Raiders fall in valiant effort against No. 1 FSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Nearly two and a half hours worth of lightning delays interrupted a Sunday afternoon meeting between Middle Tennessee and No. 1 Florida State that saw the Blue Raiders fall, 3-0, to the top-ranked Seminoles.
Despite a Seminole-heavy scoresheet, freshman goalkeeper Sydney Chalcraft did make a number of impressive stops in the 90 minutes of action, totaling seven saves to bring her season total to 11 through the first three contests.
After an early goal put FSU on top in the fifth minute, the Blue Raider defense fought valiantly to keep the Seminoles from adding to their lead for over 20 minutes.
However, Florida State doubled their lead in the 28th minute and struck again in quick succession less than three minutes later to push the score to 3-0.
After the long weather delay that began just after the first half ended, the Blue Raider defense held strong in the second half, keeping Florida State from entering the attacking third as frequently and dangerously to hold the Noles scoreless in the final 45 minutes.
Almost halfway through the second frame Casey Riemer earned the Raiders a free kick while ranging forward from her left back position. Charlotte Van Ishoven whipped in a ball from the left on the free kick that Angie Lai got on the end of but her effort wasn't enough to beat the FSU keeper.
Kathy Thomas registered another shot on goal for the Blue Raiders minutes later, but the attempt from distance landed once again in the hands of Florida State's goalie and marked the last threat MT would make on goal.
Middle Tennessee returns to action on Thursday when they face Lipscomb at 7:00 p.m. in Nashville.
