Raiders drop road contest to Lipscomb, 3-0
9/1/2016 8:59:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee dropped a difficult road match, 3-0, Thursday night against a Lipscomb team that has logged a pair of wins against SEC schools already this season.
Middle Tennessee edged Lipscomb in the final shots on goal total, 12-11, while shots were even in the match, 17-17.
"I think both teams played fairly well," Head Coach Aston Rhoden said. "Credit to Lipscomb. They took advantage of the opportunities that they got and we didn't."
Salera Jordan had a strong offensive presence in the contest, logging four shots on the Bison goal and forcing a few difficult saves while Angie Lai and Haley Nishimoto each logged a pair of shots on frame of their own.
Freshman keeper Sydney Chalcraft had a handful of excellent saves, totaling eight in the match to push her season total to 19.
The Blue Raiders and Bison played fairly even through the first 45 minutes with Lipscomb leading shots 8-6 while MT edged them out in shots on goal 5-4.
Despite level performances on both ends, a foul called on Middle inside the 18-yard box gave Lipscomb a penalty kick in the 33rd minute which they converted to take a 1-0 lead.
After subbing on after the Bison goal, Nishimoto provided some pressure on the Lipscomb goalkeeper with her pair of late shots on frame but couldn't put either away.
Lipscomb opened the second half strong, forcing Chalcraft to make a couple of saves early on but MT settled in and began to push towards goal in an effort to even things up.
However, with just over 28 minutes remaining in the contest, Lipscomb was able to open up the Blue Raider defense and earn a second goal amidst a controversial offside call that was eventually overturned.
The Bison sealed their first ever win against the Blue Raiders in the 78th minute as a goal from right at 18 yards out screamed into the back of the net, putting the match out of reach for the young Raiders.
MT did have one final chance to get on the scoresheet as they were awarded a penalty kick of their own inside of five minutes remaining, but the Lipscomb keeper preserved the shutout with her 11th save of the evening.
Middle Tennessee finishes off the weekend on Sunday when they host another Nashville foe in Belmont. The Raiders and Bruins are set to kick things off at 4:00 p.m. at Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
