MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team got off to a perfect start in the new season, defeating Lipscomb, 5-2, and Belmont, 7-0, at the Adams Tennis Complex Sunday afternoon.
The Bisons gave the Blue Raiders some fits early in their match, taking two out of the three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
"Lipscomb came in here and wanted to win, and I give them a lot of credit," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "They're a very good team, and a great doubles team. The message was just that we had to be ready to go and that there's a lot of tennis left to play after doubles.
We had to step up and defend our home court."
MT responded in singles by reeling off four consecutive victories, including wins by Luisa Zirilli at No. 6, Costanza Magazzini at No. 4, Sarah Sediri at No. 5, and Lidia Burrows at No. 2.
Lipscomb's Viktoriya Dzyuba entered the season ranked No. 53 in singles by the ITA, and she provided the second Bison team point by winning 6-2, 6-4 at the top spot in the lineup. Marta Peris Herrero finished off the 5-2 win against Lipscomb with a triumph in a third set tiebreak.
The Blue Raiders carried the momentum gained into their second match of the day, a 7-0 sweep of Belmont.
Magazzini and Burrows cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles, while Maria Josefina Zehnder teamed up with Sediri to earn a win, 6-2, and clinch the doubles point for Middle.
Holly Horsfall and Zehnder both earned singles victories against the Bruins en route to MT's sweep of Belmont, meaning all four of MT's newcomers earned singles victories in their first day of competition.
"It was huge for them to get those wins to build confidence," Ramsay said of his newcomers. "We need the experience. For them to come in and compete the way that they did was great, but we have a lot of work to do as well."
Next up for the Blue Raiders is a trip to Knoxville this weekend to face Tennessee and Wake Forest.
