Johnson's 25 points leads MT
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Alex Johnson continued her torrid pace with 25 points against Southern Miss, but it wasn't enough as Middle Tennessee dropped an 81-61 decision to the Golden Eagles here Thursday.
The Lady Raiders (11-8, 6-2) suffered just their second loss in the last 10 games as Southern Miss (12-8, 4-4) built a 35-24 halftime lead, and then extended it throughout the second half to earn the win.
"You have to give Southern Miss a lot of credit," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "Coach Joye Lee-McNelis and her staff did a good job, and Southern Miss' players did a good job throughout the game. We will have to regroup because we have another tough game ahead of us at Louisiana Tech (Saturday)."
Johnson was a bright spot. The reigning Co-Player of the Week in C-USA, Johnson was dominant in the paint. Her 25-point effort came on 9-of-10 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Johnson also added four rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block in 40 minutes of action.
Ty Petty also produced double figures in the scoring column for Middle Tennessee with 17 points to go with four assists and four steals. Rebecca Reuter added nine points and four rebounds. Kyla Allison added five points. Abbey Sissom lead the team in rebounds (6) and assists (6).
Brittanny Dinkins led Southern Miss with 21 points and Keri Jewett-Giles added 20 for the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss shot 59 percent for the game and 43 percent from 3-point range. Consequently, Middle Tennessee shot 46 percent for the game, but just 22 percent from 3-point range where it was 6-of-27. Middle Tennessee was also guilty of 24 turnovers, which Southern Miss turned in 24 points.
