HAMMOND, La. – The Middle Tennessee softball team continued their hot start to the 2017 season by collecting one win on the first day of the Lion Classic II in Hammond, La. by defeating Southeast Missouri 8-4. The second game was called a no contest due to rain and will not be rescheduled. The Blue Raiders move to 5-1 on the season for the first time in program history.
The Redhawks of Southeast Missouri got out to fast start, scoring three runs on four hits in the first inning.
The Blue Raiders were able to get two across in the bottom of second as Dani Munoz was hit by a pitch and Morgan Harris hit an infield single. Payton Grove then hit a high pop fly into shallow right field with two outs. The SEMO second baseman dropped the pop fly allowing Munoz and Harris to score.
In the third, MT evened the score at three apiece as Austyn Whaley sent a solo home run deep over the left field fence.
The game remained knotted at threes until the Blue Raiders were able to break the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Lexi Cushing got the rally started with a single to right center and Harris followed with a single up the middle. Then, with two outs, freshman Keely McGee launched her second home run of the season just over the centerfield fence to give MT a 6-3 lead. The Raiders were able to keep the inning alive as the next three batters were walked to load the bases. Hitting in the four spot, Whaley then singled just past the short stop to drive in two more runs.
The Redhawks sent a solo home run over the right field fence in the top of the seventh, but the Raiders were able to hold off the late charge for a 8-4 win.
Cori Jennings got the win in the circle, pitching the complete game to improve to 3-1 on the year. She struck out two and had no walks.
The tournament will resume tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 18 as scheduled. The Blue Raiders face UT Arlington at 1pm and the hosts, Southeastern Louisiana, at 3pm.
