MOBILE, Ala. – In the final weekend of the regular season, Middle Tennessee women's tennis fell to South Alabama on Friday but bounced back on Saturday with a win over Troy, 4-2.
The Jaguars took the doubles point on Friday against the Blue Raiders to take a 1-0 lead into singles after winning by a score of 6-1 at No. 1 and 2.
In singles action, Costanza Magazzini, Luisa Zirilli and Marta Peris Herrero were all unable to finish their matches, with Magazzini and Herrero up a set on their courts. South Alabama won straight set matches at No. 1, 3 and 6 to clinch the 4-0 win over the Blue Raiders.
Against Troy on Saturday, MT won its 10th doubles point of the year and improved to 7-3 when winning the doubles point this season, as Magazzini teamed with Lidia Burrows at No. 2 for a 7-6 win, followed by Maria Josefina Zehnder and Herrero at No. 3, who won 7-6.
"Today was a great team win," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "Doubles was about as close as it could get, and we did the right things."
Zehnder cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win at the top spot of the MT lineup, followed by a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 by Herrero. Burrows dropped her first set by a narrow margin at No. 2 but bounced back to win the second set, 6-4, and was dominant in the final set, blanking her opponent, 6-0.
"I'm very proud of Lidia today for hanging in there today down a set and 0-3 in the second set and battling her way back," Ramsay added. "This was a complete team win for us today. I'm happy for our girls, and I believe this is a great way to go into the tournament."
Middle Tennessee wraps up the regular season with a 10-14 mark on the year heading into next weekend's Conference USA Championship hosted by North Texas.
