Great efforts from Ryan Kemp and Devin Conn were not enough
Kemp went 3-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and three runs scored to lead a 10-hit attack. He was the only Blue Raider with a multi-hit game. The setback ruined an otherwise outstanding relief effort from freshman Devin Conn, who was saddled with the loss despite 3-2/3 innings of two-hit baseball, striking out a career-high seven.
Conn retired the first eight batters he faced in succession, including striking out the first five.
It was a tough setback for the Blue Raiders (14-16, 3-7), who had three different leads throughout the game.
After spotting Old Dominion (23-8, 8-2) a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings, Middle Tennessee came off the deck with a three-spot in the bottom of the second to go on top 3-2. The Blue Raiders took advantage of Monarch miscues in the frame, which started with Aaron Aucker reaching on a leadoff walk and Drew Huff being hit with a pitch to put runners at first and second.
With one out, Kemp's hustle enabled Middle Tennessee to enjoy a big inning. Kemp hit a ball into the hole at second, forcing the second sacker to range way to his left to make the play. Jared Young fielded the ball, spun and threw. Not only did Kemp beat the throw, but the ball also got past the first baseman, allowing one run to score and putting two more runners in scoring position. Kaleb King followed with an opposite-field single to plate two more runs and provide the Blue Raiders the 3-2 advantage.
The see-saw affair continued as Old Dominion tacked on one run in the third to tie it, 3-3, and one in the fourth to go up, 4-3.
Kemp got it even in the bottom of the fourth when he turned on a pitch and smashed a line drive over the fence in left field for his second career home run to tie the game, 4-4. Middle Tennessee regained the lead as the power supply continued compliments of Brad Jarreau.
The senior centerfielder had an outstanding at-bat, fouling off pitch after pitch to stay alive, eventually working the count full and then unloading on pitch and powering it deep over the left-field fence for a no-doubt-about-it two-run circuit clout to provide a 6-4 Blue Raider edge.
It did not last long.
Starter Jake Wyrick surrendered a leadoff double followed by a two-run homer as the Monarchs came right back to even the score, 6-6, in the top of the fifth. After allowing another solo home run to allow the Monarchs to go up 7-6, Wyrick's day came to a close after allowing 11 hits and seven runs, six earned, in 4-2/3 innings of work.
Enter Conn, who was outstanding out of the pen. The redshirt freshman relief ace struck out the first five he faced to keep the game close, and the Blue Raiders got it even in the bottom of the sixth.
Once again, Kemp was in the middle of the action as the bottom of the order came up huge. The second baseman led off the inning with a single, stole second and scored when number nine hitter Chaz Vesser drilled an opposite-field single into right field to even the score, 7-7. Delgado doubled into right field to put runners at second and third, and Jarreau followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Vesser, with the go-ahead run and an 8-7 advantage.
Unfortunately, for the Blue Raiders, Old Dominion's trend continued as it scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to take the 9-8 victory. The visitors scored in seven of the nine innings to secure the one-run game.
Game 2 of the series takes place at Reese Smith Jr., Field Saturday at 4 p.m.
Radio broadcast for tomorrow's and Sunday's game will be on 89.5 FM. Live stream of the game will be on CUSA.TV/RaiderVision.
