BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Coming off its first road loss of the season, Middle Tennessee must reset to prepare for a trip to E.A. Diddle Arena to face rival Western Kentucky on Saturday, a battle to move back level with the Hilltoppers for the top spot in Conference USA.
This matchup marks the 135th meeting in series history between the two schools. Although the Hilltoppers hold the all-time lead, the Blue Raiders have dominated of late, winning 11 of the last 13 matchups dating back to 2010 and four of five since joining Conference USA.
The Hilltoppers (14-5, 6-0) are fresh off an eight-point win over UAB to usurp the Blue Raiders for first place in the conference. Five players finished the game in double figures, with the forward combination of Dwight Coleby (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Justin Johnson (18 and 8) leading the way.
For Middle Tennessee (13-5, 5-1), their defensive output against Marshall held the Herd to their second-lowest scoring total of the season, usually a recipe for success, but too many missed shots and turnovers for the Blue Raiders allowed Marshall to edge out the victory.
Luckily, the short turnaround gives MT a quick chance to bounce back. The opportunity to do so in the 100 miles of hate rivalry creates an even larger incentive to get back on track.
In conference play, senior guard Giddy Potts has stepped up his scoring output and efficiency, posting an average of 15 points and five rebounds per game on 45 percent shooting from the field and 42 percent from three. Potts is joined in double figures against C-USA competition by Nick King (17.5) and Brandon Walters (10.0)
Tip-off between the Blue Raiders and the Hilltoppers is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in E.A. Diddle Arena. The game can also be viewed on Facebook via live stream by Stadium.
