MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (5-14, 0-6) dropped its contest to Charlotte (12-10, 2-4) in straight-sets in the Halton Arena on Friday evening.

Redshirt-senior Vonnie Covington paced the Blue Raider attack against Charlotte, inking six kills from her middle position. Covington hit on a season-best .417 clip over the 49ers while leading the Blue Raider offense for the first time this season. Similarly, senior Bailey Mason and freshman Samira Lawson Body recorded five kills apiece in the three-set contest. Along with her five kills in the match, Mason picked up eight digs for the Blue Raiders.
Meanwhile, senior Regan Coughlin paced the Blue Raider backrow, inking 10 digs. Likewise, junior Brienna Tankesley (6), freshman Julia Valdez (4) and freshman Sarah Sumida (4) notched a combined 14 digs in the Friday night contest.
From their setter positions, junior Taylor Hammill (14) and Sumida (10) contributed a combined 24 helpers while Hammill added five digs.
Junior Dora Peonia (3), redshirt-sophomore Aubrie Huddleston (3), and sophomore Josie Maxim (2) rounded off the Blue Raider attack each adding two or more kills in the match.
Set by Set
In the first frame, Mason inked the first Blue Raider kill of the contest to tie the set at 1-all before Maxim and Hammill recorded a kill apiece to tie the frame once again (3-3). The 49ers would notch the next two points in the contest before Valdez knocked down a kill from the middle to bring Middle Tennessee within one (4-5). Four additional Blue Raiders contributed kills in the first set, including Peonia (1), Lawson Body (1), Huddleston (2) and Covington (1). However, the Blue Raiders were unable to regain their early momentum in the set, dropping the first frame to Charlotte, 25-13.
The Blue Raiders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second set over the 49ers behind a kill from Peonia and a Charlotte attack error. The 49ers bounced back to ink the next two points in the contest to tie the frame at 2-all. The teams battled back and forth in the frame, tying the set another five times (8-8) before Charlotte sparked a 3-1 run over Middle Tennessee (9-11). The Blue Raiders were unable to get any closer in the set as the team dropped the second set to the 49ers, 25-12.
In the third and final frame, the Blue Raiders produced a hard-fought battle but were unable to stop the Charlotte offense, falling 25-17 in the third set.

Middle Tennessee will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 12 as the team takes on Marshall in Huntington, W.Va. at noon.
