Middle Tennessee Women's Tennis will play close to home this weekend as they travel to the June Stewart Invitational at Vanderbilt University. The Blue Raiders will compete with the entire team for the second time this fall season in a hidden dual format against three opposing teams. Fans can get live updates on Twitter (@MT_WomensTennis).
Match Information
June Stewart Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt University
Scouting the Competition
Vanderbilt – The Commodores return to the courts two weeks after making a state at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships in Chattanooga. The Vanderbilt duo of Summer Dvorak and Christina Rosca took home the doubles title while two other Commodores, Emily Smith and Amanda Meyer faced off in the singles championship match with Meyer prevailing to take the crown. This weekend's match will certainly serve as a test for the Blue Raiders as they'll be going up against one of the top teams in the region.
Texas Tech – Senior Francesca Sella posted the top finish for the Red Raiders in the Texas Regional, reaching the semi-final before falling to the top seed in the tournament. Outside the ITA Regional, TTU has been led by their six freshmen so far this fall with Sydney Jones and Olivia Peet winning the doubles title of the Racquet Club Invitational.
Georgia Tech – Kenya Jones has been the top Yellow Jacket through two ITA events this fall. After reaching the round of 16 at the All-American, Jones made it as far as the quarterfinals in the Southeast Regional singles and semifinals in doubles. GT made the national semifinals last season before falling to Vanderbilt.
Tournament History
The Blue Raiders competed in the 2016 June Stewart Invitational. Alory Pereira highlighted the weekend winning her draw while Maria Josefina Zehnder fell in the consolation of the top singles bracket.
Players to watch
Lidia Burrows – The Junior reached the Round of 16 as the top finisher for Middle Tennessee at the ITA Regional Championships. Burrows knocked off the #4 and #17 seeds on her way to the round of 16 and an impressive weekend in Chattanooga.
Luisa Zirilli – Zirilli picked up two singles wins the last time she was in this tournament and is 3-0 in the fall singles play outside of the ITA regional.
Coach's Comments
"I think this will be a good weekend for us to get quality matches against a few top teams in the nation," said Head Coach Tayo Bailey-Duvall. "I expect we will compete well, while implementing strategies and mentalities we have been working on since ITA regionals."
