Davis leads way with 16 points
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee put on a complete all-around demonstration of sound basketball in its first of two exhibition games, downing Lindsey Wilson, 90-45, at Murphy Center Sunday.
Though the outcome doesn't count, Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell was excited to see an up-tempo offense that put 90 points on the board. The Lady Raiders topped the 70-point plateau just twice last season with a high-water mark of 73 twice.
Every Lady Raider who dressed for competition played with 11 of the 13 players getting 10 or more minutes in the 40-minute game.
"I was pleased with the fact that we played a lot of players and were able to see a lot of different combinations out there," Insell said. "The good thing is we now have some film to evaluate our players against another team. We did a lot of good things out there today, but there is plenty of room for improvement."
Sophomore center Jadona Davis led the offensive charge with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go with five rebounds. Three other Lady Raiders reached double figures with Anna Jones scoring 12 on the strength of four 3-pointers (on four attempts), while Alex Johnson and Alexis Whittington each scored 11.
Newcomer A'Queen Hayes was a stat sheet stuffer with eight points, seven rebounds and four assists, and freshman Mykia Dowdell contributed eight points and collected six steals. Freshman Taylor Sutton earned the start at point and added nine points.
The Lady Raiders shot 40 percent (30-of-74) from the field, but they were even better beyond the arc where they nailed 10-of-23 treys for 43.5 percent. Jones led the way with a 4-for-4 effort, while Whittington poured in three.
Defensively, Middle Tennessee allowed just two 3-pointers and forced 40 Lindsey Wilson turnovers. Eight different Lady Raiders had steals, led by Dowdell with six. Johnson, Sutton, Jones, Whittington and LaSonja Edwards each had three.
Middle Tennessee jumped out to a 38-24 halftime lead and never looked back on the way to the win.
The Lady Raiders will play host to Trevecca in the final exhibition game of the preseason Wednesday. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m.
