Volleyball Drops Friday Afternoon Contest to North Texas, 3-0

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (7-18, 2-9) dropped its Friday afternoon contest to North Texas (12-15, 8-3) in the Alumni Memorial Gym in straight-sets (25-18, 25-9, 25-22).
The Blue Raiders maintained a balanced attack in the contest, with four players inking five or more kills in the contest. Junior Dora Peonia, senior Regan Coughlin and senior Bailey Mason paced the Middle Tennessee attacking, recording six kills apiece on Friday. Meanwhile, redshirt-senior Vonnie Covington contributed five kills in the contest from her middle position.
Also contributing to the Blue Raider attack included, freshman Emma Grever (3), freshman Julia Valdez (3), freshman Samira Lawson Body (2), freshman Sarah Sumida (1) and junior Taylor Hammill (1).
From their setter positions Hammill (16) and Sumida (11) contributed a combined 27 helpers in the contest. Likewise, the setter duo each picked up a dig in the match.
Junior Brienna Tankesley notched 10 digs from the Middle Tennessee backrow while Coughlin (6) and Mason (4) contributed a combined 10.
In the first frame, the Blue Raiders opened the set on a 3-1 run with kills from Coughlin, Covington and Grever. However, North Texas battled back to tie the frame at 3-all. The two teams battled back and forth tying the frame another four times (7-7) before the Mean Green created a 4-0 run over Middle Tennessee to take the lead (11-7). The Blue Raiders battled back within five (20-15) but were unable to get any closer as UNT secured the set, 25-18.
The Blue Raiders jumped out to another early lead over North Texas in the second set (4-1) before the Mean Green offense took control of the second set, creating a 15-2 run over Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders dropped the second frame to UNT, 12-9.
In the third and final frame, Middle Tennessee battled back and forth with North Texas, tying the third frame 13 times while recording 14 kills in the set. However, North Texas claimed the third over the Blue Raiders, 25-22.
Middle Tennessee will return to the Alumni Memorial Gym on Sunday for a midafternoon contest against UTSA. Before the match, the team will honor its three seniors.
