Blue Raiders Fall to UTSA Despite Strong Senior Performance

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (7-19, 2-10) fell on Sunday afternoon to UTSA (18-7, 10-3) in the teams Alumni Memorial Gym finale in straight-sets (25-15, 25-14, 25-21).
The senior class closed their AMG appearance in style, with the three seniors being the top-three scorers in the competition on Sunday.
Senior Bailey Mason led the attack for the team in her last home game of the season, inking 12 kills. The Forsyth, Ill. product hit on a .409 clip in the three-set contest. Likewise, redshirt-senior Vonnie Covington recorded eight kills while hitting on a .400 clip while senior Regan Coughlin added five kills in the contest.
Also recording kills for the Blue Raiders included junior Dora Peonia (2), sophomore Aubrie Huddleston (2) and freshman Julia Valdez (1).
From their setter positions freshman Sarah Sumida (16) and junior Taylor Hammill (12) inked a combined 28 helpers in the contest.
Meanwhile, Coughlin controlled the Middle Tennessee backrow, claiming nine digs in the contest. Similarly, junior Brienna Tankesley (8) and Hammill (6) contributed a combined 14 digs in the match.
In the first frame, the Roadrunners inked the first two points in the set before Mason put the Blue Raiders on the board will a kill from the outside (2-1). UTSA continued on, creating a 4-1 run over the Blue Raiders before a Huddleston kill and a Roadrunner attacking error brought the Blue Raiders within three. However, the Blue Raiders were unable to get any closer in the frame as the Roadrunners claimed the set, 25-15.
UTSA opened the third set with an attacking error before creating a 4-0 run over the Blue Raiders to lead the set, 4-1. The Blue Raider seniors battled back with back-to-back kills from Covington and Coughlin to bring the team within one (4-3). Middle Tennessee created a balanced attack in the second frame with Valdez, Coughlin, Mason and Covington all inking a kill a piece (15-8). However, the Blue Raiders were unable to get any closer as the Roadrunners claimed the second frame, 25-14.
In the third and final set, Middle Tennessee came out fighting, tying the first 16 points in the contest (8-8) with the Roadrunners. UTSA created a small lead before a Coughlin and Peonia block created a 3-0 Blue Raider run to bring Middle Tennessee within two of UTSA (16-14). Middle Tennessee put together to late 3-0 runs but were unable to secure the set as UTSA claimed the final frame over the Blue Raiders, 25-21.
The Blue Raiders will wrap up its conference slate next weekend with a pair of matches in Florida.
