MT falls at No. 18 Kentucky
LEXINGTON, Ky. – It was a tale of two halves for Middle Tennessee in a 72-55 setback against No. 18-ranked Kentucky here Saturday.
The Lady Raiders (7-3) had a sluggish start and Kentucky (10-1) capitalized as it built a 45-23 halftime advantage by attacking Middle Tennessee and forcing 12 turnovers that fueled a 15-4 advantage in points off of turnovers.
There were positives for the Lady Raiders. Senior standout Alex Johnson poured in a game-high 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field, to go with five rebounds and three assists. With her season-best performance, Johnson moved past Sharon McClannahan and Stephanie Capley into 12th on the Middle Tennessee all-time scoring list with 1,489 points.
A'Queen Hayes was the only other Lady Raider in double figures with 13 points. Hayes also dished out six assists and pulled four rebounds. Another bright spot for the Lady Raiders was the play of freshman Alexis Whittington. The guard played a career-high 19 minutes, all in the second half, and responded with a career-best nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from 3-point range. Whittington also pulled four rebounds and collected a steal.
At the end of the day, Middle Tennessee's opening 20 minutes proved too much to overcome.
"Kentucky had a lot to do with that, but we also made some mistakes there that helped the Kentucky cause," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "And we turned the ball over they certainly capitalized. Kentucky has a really good basketball team, and (Head Coach) Matthew Mitchell does a good job with his team.
"We did show progress in the second half and there are some positives to take from here and build upon."
Middle Tennessee's halftime adjustments seemed to help as the Lady Raiders protected the ball and executed their offense better as evidenced by just four second-half turnovers. Coincidentally, the Lady Raiders had a better showing with 32 second-half points – up nine from the first 20 minutes.
The Lady Raiders will return to action when they play host to UNC-Asheville Thursday. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m.
