Will face Fordham in Classic final
BRONX, N.Y. – Middle Tennessee started strong and led wire-to-wire in disposing of Chattanooga, 58-47, in the Fordham Holiday Classic here Saturday.
The Lady Raiders (9-3) will face host Fordham in the Classic Championship Sunday at 2 p.m.
Seniors A'Queen Hayes, Alex Johnson and Jess Louro led the Lady Raiders, who won for the seventh time in eight outings.
Hayes scored a game-high 18 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks – all game highs. The senior guard also surpassed the 1,000-point mark in her career during the game. Johnson was a force inside with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Johnson's performance enabled her to move into the Top 10 on the all-time scoring list at Middle Tennessee.
Louro poured in 12 on the strength of four 3-pointers and also added six rebounds to her total.
"We came out strong and were really shooting the ball well early," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We had excellent ball movement and when we found the open player, she knocked down the shot. That strong start was huge in a game like this, away from home in a tournament setting. We will have another tough challenge (Sunday) against Fordham on their homecourt."
With Hayes, Johnson and Louro clicking on all cylinders early, Middle Tennessee raced out to a 15-point lead in the second quarter. The Lady Raiders never trailed in the contest, although Chattanooga did make a couple of runs in the second half to trim the double-figure deficit to six.
The Lady Raiders forced 25 turnovers, scoring 26 points off of those Chattanooga miscues, while committing 14. Middle Tennessee also collected 12 steals.
