MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A career night from Antonio Green was not enough Saturday as Middle Tennessee fell to in-state foe Lipscomb, 84-74. Now, the Blue Raiders look to get back in the win column against their fourth Nashville opponent of the season as they travel to Vanderbilt Wednesday.
Green's 30 points on 10 made field goals and seven trifectas were all career highs for the Tupelo native. The junior has established himself as the premier scoring threat for the Blue Raiders and has scored 19 or more points in six of the team's eight games to bring him within 21 points of 1,000 for his career.
Freshman Jayce Johnson has started to break out as well, ranking as the second leading scorer in each of the last two games for the Blue Raiders and scored a career-high 16 last time out in his first collegiate start against Lipscomb.
The Commodores most recently traveled to Miami for the Hoophall Invitational, where they lost just their second game of the season in the Sunshine State at the hands of North Carolina State.
They'll be without point guard Darius Garland (16.2 ppg), who was the team's leading scorer before his injury. Simisola Shittu has become the main offensive threat in his absence and leads the team in both points (16.0) and rebounds (8.0).
"Vanderbilt has several offensive weapons and are able to play uptempo because they have bigs, particularly Shittu, who can get rebounds and start the break," McDevitt said. "They also have very good length and size on the perimeter and have a balance of guys that can make perimeter shots and guys that are athletic, downhill drivers.
"Their mobility and length allows them to throw different looks at you defensively that keep you off-balance, and because of all of those things they can present a lot of problems."
Wednesday's contest at Vanderbilt will televised on SEC Network. The Blue Raiders and Commodores are set to tip at 6:30 p.m. CT.
