Blue Raiders travel to Rice on Wednesday
Match Notes
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team (10-2) will be looking to carry the momentum gained from defeating Wisconsin on Sunday into a rematch of last season's Conference USA semifinals with Rice (4-6) on Wednesday.
The Blue Raiders will be looking to avenge a 4-2 loss suffered at the hands of the Owls at the Adams Tennis Complex last April. Only two members of last year's team that played against MT return for Rice this season: Eric Rutledge, who played No. 5 singles, and Daniel Warren, who played No. 3 doubles.
Rutledge mans the top of the singles lineup this season, and he has done so with a 7-0 record in dual match play. While the Owls are 4-4 as a team at both No. 3 and 4, they are still looking for their first win at the bottom of the lineup. At No. 6 singles, Rice is 0-10, and at No. 3 doubles, the Owls are 0-8 as a team.
As for the depth of the Blue Raiders, MT is a combined 22-2 at No. 5 and 6 singles this season, with Gian Issa leading the way with a 12-0 record in his final spring campaign. In doubles action, Tom Moonen and Chris Edge are looking to get back to their winning ways and make a case for being a ranked doubles team once again. Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore has paired with Miguel Negre Fernandez to lock down the No. 2 doubles spot with a 6-0 record.
A pair of Blue Raiders are looking to climb up the program records lists despite the season only being at the halfway point. Issa is three singles wins away from being tied with Julius Robberts for the eighth most singles wins in program history. Edge is one doubles win and three singles wins away from being in the top 10 in both categories among freshmen in program history.
After the showdown in Houston with Rice, MT returns home to the ATC on Friday at 2 p.m. against No. 22 Tulane for a pink out match, supporting breast cancer awareness. Updates and information regarding both matches will be on Twitter, @MT_MensTennis, and Facebook, MTSU Men's Tennis.
