MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Coming off their dominant showing against Rice, Middle Tennessee prepares for a streaking North Texas team that travels to historic Murphy Center on Saturday.
The Mean Green have won four straight in Conference USA, including a 67-60 upset over UAB in Birmingham Thursday night. Four players scored in doubles figures, led by Roosevelt Smart (18 points) and DJ Draper (16 points).
"(North Texas) is a good team; they're tough, they're physical, they'll guard man-to-man," said Coach Kermit Davis. "We're going to have to play well."
North Texas ranks second in Conference USA in three-point percentage defense, just behind the Blue Raiders.
However, Middle Tennessee has been forceful on both ends of the court. Against Rice, 11 different Blue Raiders scored, including four players registering in double figures. All together the Blue Raiders exploded for 94 points on 51.5 percent shooting.
The second half of play saw an outpouring from senior guard Giddy Potts, who scored 19 points (7-12 FG, 5-9 3PFG) in only 15 minutes of action after the break. Overall, Potts finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.
"My body felt good, and I just came out and hit some shots," said Potts. "My teammates just kept telling me to shoot and play good defense, so I did."
Antwain Johnson continued his strong scoring pace, scoring 17 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists. Johnson has scored 15 or more in four of his last five games for the Blue Raiders.
Since their loss to Marshall, Middle Tennessee has won six straight games. Overall, the Blue Raiders have won 28 of their last 30 games against Conference USA opponents.
Tip-off against the Mean Green is scheduled for 5:00 PM in historic Murphy Center. The game can be viewed on Stadium via Facebook. Fans can also tune in to the Blue Raider Network on 94.9 FM.
