MT triumphs in extras over Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite spotting the opponent five runs in the first inning, Middle Tennessee came roaring back to beat Lipscomb Bisons 8-7 in 10 innings at Ken Dugan Field on Wednesday.
Coming into today's contest, the Blue Raiders were 2-5 when their opponent scores first, as was the case for Lipscomb, who got most of their production from a first inning grand slam. But that didn't stop the MT offense from chipping away at the Bisons lead, little-by-little.
"It was pretty back-and-forth, we're very fortunate to come back after being down early," said head coach Jim McGuire. "I thought we competed well throughout though . . . I'm proud of the way we came back.
"We found a way to win."
Things got started in the top of the second, when Middle Tennessee plated two runs off a Lipscomb wild pitch and hit by pitch to consecutive Blue Raider batters. MT added another run in the third off a Blake Benefield groundout to the third baseman, bringing things to 5-3.
The Blue Raiders broke through in the fifth though, scoring three runs off Lipscomb pitcher Dayton Tripp. Upperclassman Ryan Kemp, Aaron Aucker and Benefield all reached base safely to start the frame.
That followed with a Brycen Thomas groundout, pushing Kemp home and closing the Bisons lead to just one run. Two batters later, third baseman Drew Huff smashed a single to left field, bringing the tying and leading run across the plate.
Huff finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI; he also threw two scoreless innings for Middle Tennessee, getting the win for his effort. Aaron Antonini also had a productive game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
But Lipscomb never gave up. The Bisons added a run in the eighth and again in the ninth frames to notch things even and send the game into extra innings.
That opened the door for Austin Dennis in the 10th inning. After back-to-back singles from Aaron Antonini and Huff to start the frame, the Blue Raiders were down to their final at-bat.
Dennis delivered, smashing a double off the right-center field wall, scoring the game winning run.
"It was a wild game, especially towards the end. (Ausin) Dennis came up big in the 10th," Huff said. "You have to give credit where it's due, but it was a huge win for us."
Sophomore right hander Grant Williams got the start on the mound for Middle Tennessee, coming off back-to-back dominant performances against Memphis and Austin Peay. While Williams outing against the Bisons was short-lived, only one inning pitched, Carter Bair was dominant in his relief outing.
Bair came in the bottom of the second and retired the first seven batters he faced. After a Lipscomb single in the fourth broke his streak, Bair responded by retiring the next nine batters in a row.
He finished the day hurling 5-1/3 shutout innings, striking out five and giving up zero runs.
"None of this would be possible without Carter, I thought he was really good tonight," McGuire added. "He solidified everything and gave us an opportunity to come back."
The Blue Raiders open up conference play at home this weekend when they host Charlotte. First pitch on Friday is scheduled at 6:00 p.m.
