MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – With the Conference USA Championship less than a month away, Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team continued to pick up momentum with a 7-0 win over Alabama A&M today.
The Blue Raiders improved to 14-6 on the season, including a 10-2 record at home and 12-1 when winning the doubles point.
"One of our goals is to win the conference, so winning seven of our last nine matches gives us a lot of confidence," MT assistant coach Olaya Garrido Rivas said. "This helps us believe that we can win in big matches."
To start the match, Lidia Burrows and Marta Peris Herrero teamed up for the first time this spring for a 6-1 victory. At the top doubles spot, Kim Kermet paired with Luisa Zirilli for a 6-1 win to improve their record as a duo to 7-3.
In singles, the Blue Raiders gave up a combined 11 games in 12 sets, as all matches were closed out in straight sets. Herrero blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6, and Zirilli, Lee Barnard and Costanza Magazzini all gave up one game in their dominating wins. Maria Josefina Zehnder put the final tally on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 score on court two.
MT takes on No. 37 FIU on Friday afternoon at the Adams Tennis Complex, followed by a match against Marshall on Saturday as the regular season closes in two weeks.
"We have really important matches next week, and we're expecting to have really tough matches on every court, so it was beneficial to get Kermet and Zani [Barnard] some rest in singles for next week," Rivas added.
