MURFREESBORO, Tenn.– With four regular season matches remaining, all at the Adams Tennis Complex, Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team will look to continue building momentum as they take on a pair of Conference USA opponents this weekend.
The weekend will open with a showdown against No. 41 FIU at 2 p.m. on Friday. The Panthers are 10-2 entering the weekend with matches against MT and WKU upcoming. Andrea Lazaro leads FIU as the No. 5-ranked singles player in the country according to the ITA. Ulyana Grib and Maryna Veksler make up the No. 21-ranked doubles combo with a record of 5-3 at the top spot for FIU.
Lazaro pairs with Nerma Caluk for a 10-0 record at the No. 3 spot in the lineup. Despite the clear strength at the top of the Panthers' lineup, the potential Achilles heel is at the middle of the singles lineup. FIU is 3-5 at No. 4 and 4-4 at No. 5. Wins in the middle of the doubles lineup are not always a given for the Panthers either, as they are 6-4 at No. 2 as a team.
MT will close down the weekend by trying to get their first ever win over Marshall in program history. The Thundering Herd has defeated the Blue Raiders all 10 times the two teams have squared off. Marshall brings a 3-16 record into Murfreesboro for Saturday's match at 3 p.m. with wins coming against Cincinnati, Navy and West Virginia State. The Herd is currently 0-3 against C-USA opponents, as FIU, North Texas and Old Dominion have all shut out Marshall already this season.
Only six players are on the roster for Marshall, making depth a major issue. The Herd is a combined 5-30 at No. 5 and 6 singles and also has a losing record at No. 1, 2 and 3. In doubles, Marshall is 8-25 as a team at No. 1 and 3. Stephanie Smith is the reigning C-USA Athlete of the Week after giving up just one game in four sets against West Virginia and West Virginia State last weekend.
