DENTON, Texas – For the second consecutive match, Middle Tennessee had to rely on its lineup depth in singles, as the Blue Raiders won over North Texas, 4-3, in their first Conference USA action this season.
MT is now 11-4 on the year and is currently on a four-match win streak, and the Blue Raiders improved to 10-1 this season when they win the doubles point. Kim Kermet and Luisa Zirilli teamed up at No. 1 for a doubles win for the Blue Raiders, and Lee Barnard paired with Zani Barnard to help MT clinch the first point of the match, winning on court two.
The Mean Green claimed straight set wins at the top half of the lineup, but the Blue Raiders proved to be the deeper team, as MT won at No. 4, 5 and 6 to clinch the 4-3 win over North Texas. Wednesday's win was the first over North Texas since 2005, halting a nine-match win streak in the series from the Mean Green.
Zani Barnard posted a 6-2, 6-2 score on court five, followed by her sister Lee on court six, who won with a score of 6-2, 6-4. It took three sets at No. 4, but Lidia Burrows bested her opponent and helped MT take the 4-3 win with a 6-0 score in the third set.
The Blue Raiders are now 1-2 in true road matches and 2-0 in neutral site showdowns and will travel to Norfolk, Virginia, next week for matches against Georgetown and No. 39 Old Dominion.
