MURFREESBORO, Tenn.– The Conference USA Championship is on the horizon, but Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team is focused on a pair of upcoming matches at the Adams Tennis Complex to conclude the regular season.
MT (15-7) hosts South Alabama on Friday at 2 p.m. in the first match of the weekend. The Jaguars are 17-2 heading into the weekend and are 8-2 in matches away from their home courts. Freshman phenom Yu Fujioka leads her team with an unblemished dual match singles record at 18-0, playing mostly at the No. 3 and 4 spots in the lineup. Alexandria Stiteler mans the top spot in the lineup with a record of 14-2 in the spring, including eight wins in her last 10 matches.
No. 2 singles is the only exception to South Alabama's dominance this season, as four Jaguars have combined for a 7-8 mark on the second singles court. In doubles, South Alabama is strong, boasting a combined winning percentage of .787 in the spring. Seven pairs have combined for a 16-2 record at the No. 3 doubles spot.
The Blue Raiders close out the regular season with a Senior Day showdown against Xavier on Sunday at noon. The Muskateers are 11-7 heading into the weekend with matches against South Alabama and MT upcoming. Lipscomb and Georgetown are the two common opponents between Xavier and MT, as both teams swept Lipscomb and defeated Georgetown. The Blue Raiders downed the Hoyas, 4-3, but Xavier earned a 5-2 win.
Individually, Sophia Abelson leads her team with an 11-3 record in singles since January, with all wins coming at the No. 3 spot. In doubles, the Muskateers tend to struggle, as they are 34-32 as a team this spring.
Maria Josefina Zehnder is the lone senior that will be celebrated on Sunday. With at least three matches remaining in the season and her Blue Raider career, she's already surpassed last season's singles win total by three and is one shy of tying last year's mark. After two seasons at Southwest Baptist, the Rafaela, Argentina, native transferred to MT, where she has 56 wins in singles and doubles combined.
Live stats are available, and attendance is free to every MT home match at the ATC. Updates and information will also be posted on Twitter, @MT_WomensTennis, and Facebook, MTSU Women's Tennis.
