Netters start C-USA tournament against UTSA

5-seed Blue Raiders look to begin tournament run

MURFREESBORO, Tenn.– With the best regular season in the Charlie Ramsay era behind them, Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team is looking to make a surprise run through the Conference USA Championship starting on Thursday.
The 5-seed Blue Raiders (17-7) are set to take on 12-seed UTSA (8-11), on Thursday at 2 p.m. in Norfolk, Virginia, the site of this year's conference tournament hosted by Old Dominion.
Lidia Burrows led the Blue Raiders in dual match singles wins in the regular season with a record of 13-7, mostly at No. 4 and 5. Newcomers Kim Kermet and Zani Barnard followed closely behind with 12 and 11 spring singles wins, respectively. In doubles, MT was 30-20 as a team, including a 13-5 mark at the No. 3 spot. Kermet paired with Luisa Zirilli mostly at the top doubles spot for an 8-6 record.
As for MT's first round opponent, the Roadrunners bring a 2-0 record against C-USA foes into the tournament and have won three of their last five matches. Laura Cabrera leads her team in dual match singles wins at 14-4, including a 7-3 mark at No. 2. The Roadrunners have a losing record at every doubles position and on all singles courts except No. 4 and 5. Cabrera pairs with Sonia Madronal to be UTSA's best doubles combo with a record of 7-9 at No. 2.
