Dennis, Sullivan homer
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Austin Dennis and Kevin Sullivan supplied home runs but it wasn't enough as Middle Tennessee dropped a 9-4 decision against Florida Atlantic in the rubber game of the three-game series at Reese Smith Jr. Field Sunday.
The Blue Raiders (25-25-1, 10-16-1) received a strong outing from Dennis, who was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI, and he also supplied two innings of two-hit, shutout baseball. Sullivan was also strong in his final home game, going 1-for-2 with a home run.
It was Senior Day as the Blue Raiders honored Aaron Aucker, Kevin Dupree, Ryan Kemp, Phil Kunsa, Will Schnure, Kevin Sullivan and Jake Wyrick.
The Blue Raiders had as many hits as Florida Atlantic (34-15-1, 17-8-1), 10, but couldn't generate as many runs. Middle Tennessee only had one error but it was a big one as a two-out miscue opened the floodgates for a four-run third.
Middle Tennessee tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the first on Dennis' home run, but the Owls struck for four in the third and three in the fourth to open a 9-2 lead.
The bullpen efforts of pitchers Peyton Wigginton and Dennis gave the Blue Raiders a chance as the two provided five innings of three-hit, shutout baseball to keep Florida Atlantic at bay.
Drew Huff singled in Aucker, who had been hit by a pitch, in the fifth to pull the Blue Raiders to within 9-3, and Sullivan provided his seventh-inning blast but the Blue Raiders could get no closer.
In addition to Dennis' two-hit game, LA Woodard and Huff were 2-for-4. Blake Benefield and Kemp also had base knocks.
Middle Tennessee will travel to Nashville to play Vanderbilt Tuesday. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
