Blue Raiders fall in final mid-week matchup
5/15/2018 11:07:00 PM | Baseball
Nashville, Tenn.-- The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (25,26-1, 10-16-1) dropped their final mid-week contest of the season to the in-state rival Vanderbilt Commodores (28-24, 13-14) by a score of 21-4 Tuesday night.
After falling behind early, Middle Tennessee plated four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-3 lead. Second baseman Ryan Kemp singled to left field with two outs in the inning to knot the game up at three. One at-bat later, Aaron Aucker drove Kemp home with a base hit to center field to score the go-ahead run.
MTSU starter Scheldon Paulk was touched up for three runs in the first inning, but worked a scoreless second inning before giving way to Grant Williams in the bottom of the third. Vanderbilt exploded for 14 runs in the frame and kept their foot on the gas pedal throughout the final six innings.
Some notables for MTSU included Kemp and Aucker, as the right side of the Blue Raider infield combined to go 2-for-6 with three RBIs tonight. Kemp increased his hitting streak to a team-high 18 games, which is also a career-high for the middle infielder. Catcher Will Schnure collected a pair of hits in his first start of the season and carries a .375 average on the year. Kevin Sullivan went 2-for-4 on the night, racking up his eighth multi-hit performance this season.
The Raiders will hit the road for a pivotal matchup with UAB to close out the regular season this weekend. Thursday's tilt is scheduled for a 6:30pm first pitch and left-hander Jake Wyrick is the projected starter.
