5/18/2018 12:01:00 AM | Baseball
BIRMINGHAM Ala. – Kevin Sullivan smashed two home runs to lead the Blue Raiders (26-26-1, 11-16-1) over UAB (20-30, 12-16) by a score of 7-4.
"Kevin had a big night." Said Head Coach Jim McGuire. "And he drove in three runs on top of that."
After a scoreless first frame for both teams, Kevin Sullivan got the scoring going with a two-run shot to right field to score Blake Benefield. Drew Huff hammered a solo home run in the very next at-bat to give the Blue Raiders a 3-0 lead. Austin Dennis hit a bloop single down the right field line to score Myles Christian to give MTSU a 4-0 advantage in the second inning.
The two-teams traded a run in the third inning before Sullivan again went deep with a solo shot to right field in the fifth inning to make it 6-2.
Sullivan had just one home run coming into the 2018 season. The senior has hit three round trippers in his last three starts.
Jake Wyrick got the start for MT. The senior put together another solid start, going six innings, while striking out seven, and giving up one earned run. The lefty also threw a season high number of pitches (118).
Both Drew Huff and Tyler Holcombe saw action out of the Blue Raiders bullpen. Holcombe finished the final two innings to pick up his first save of the season. After giving up a hit to the first batter he saw, Holcombe retired the last six batters he saw.
Junior Blake Benefield doubled three times in four at-bats while scoring three times.
Myles Christian also put together a nice night at the plate, going 2-for-3, scoring twice and also driving in a run.
The Blue Raiders look to take the series tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. RHP Zach Keenan is expected to get the start on the mound.
