MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee senior punter Matt Bonadies has been named to the preseason watch list for the 208 Ray Guy Award, as announced by the Augusta Sports Council.
The Ray Guy Award annually honors the nation's top collegiate punt. The number of eligible candidates for this season will grow when the award opens nominations in September.
Bonadies had a strong junior campaign for the Blue Raiders, finishing with a 39.6-yard average on 59 punts with a long of 64 yards. He was also a Ray Guy Award Watch List candidate in 2017.
Bonadies turned in his career long of 64 yards at Minnesota last season, when he averaged 42.1 yards for the game. He had one of his best games in the Camellia Bowl, registering five punts for a 42.7 yard average with two punts downed inside the 20 against Arkansas State.
Bonadies had eight punts of 50-plus yards in 2017, as well as placing 13 punts inside the 20-yard line.
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Guy, a Thomson, Ga., native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times a punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
