MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – "Like father, like son." It's a phrase that gets mentioned a lot around the Middle Tennessee football program.
Head Coach Rick Stockstill and his son, redshirt senior quarterback Brent Stockstill, share a lot of similarities on and off the football field.
Both are Division I quarterbacks with bowl game victories. Both have also been named to an All-American list in their collegiate careers. If you meet both away from the football field, you first notice their humbleness and easy-to-talk-to demeanor.
Come late September, the father-son duo will have yet another thing in common. They'll both be members of their respective high schools' inaugural hall of fame class.
On Sept. 27, the younger Stockstill will enter the Siegel High School Hall of Fame 12 years after his father was a member of the first Fernandina Beach High School (Florida) HOF class.
"I'm happy for him," Rick Stockstill said. "That's a great honor, and to be in the inaugural class is really cool. Siegel is important to him, and I know he's proud to be recognized."
Brent Stockstill be a part of a group that includes four teams and six individuals.
"Obviously, I couldn't have done that by myself," he said. "I had great coaches and great guys around me, and it's just a great school in general. I'm honored to be a part of that group."
The story of Brent Stockstill's days at Siegel is well-known around Middle Tennessee.
As a senior, the southpaw led the 2012 Stars to a 13-1 record and trip to the Class 6A state semifinals. He was named a Tennessee Titans Player of the Week, Mr. Football finalist, all-state recipient and earned the Daily News Journal's Most Valuable Player award during that season.
When Siegel entered the state semifinals against powerhouse Maryville, Stockstill went under center with an ACL tear suffered the previous week in a win over rival Riverdale.
Remarkably, he didn't let the bum leg deter him. He threw for an incredible 373 yards and four touchdowns in a 47-43 loss.
"That senior year was something memorable, like something in a movie," Brent Stockstill said. "That was a special group of guys and we had the whole community around us. It was unbelievable."
The older Stockstill may not have led his team into a semifinal game on one leg, but his days at Fernandina Beach were also notable.
He was named to the all-state team as a senior in 1976 with his dad, Joel Stockstill, as head coach. He later went on to Florida State University, being named a team captain three times and Honorable Mention All-American in 1981.
"In my case, I think they just needed someone else to put in [the hall of fame]," Rick Stockstill joked. "They must not have had the right numbers."
As Brent Stockstill enters the Siegel Hall of Fame, he'll do so with his dad and coach by his side.
The two become more alike every day, and both can now call themselves hall of famers.
"That means I was raised by a great man and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree," Brent Stockstill said. "It's pretty cool that we can share that."
