MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (4-11, 0-3) dropped its Sunday afternoon contest to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (8-9, 2-2) in straight sets in the Alumni Memorial Gym. Southern Miss. was able to take the contest in three frames despite Middle Tennessee taking the first set to extra points.
Match Leaders
Senior Bailey Mason controlled the Blue Raider offense with 11 total kills in the match. Likewise, junior Dora Peonia (9) and Aubrie Huddleston (7) posted for a combined 13 kills.
From her setter position, junior Taylor Hammill turned in a nice performance, totaling 30 assists while controlling the Blue Raider defensive efforts with 15 digs in the three set contest. Similarly, junior Brienna Tankesley aided in the team's defensive efforts, adding 13 digs.
Set by Set
In the first frame, southern Miss took control of the first set early with a 6-1 run over Middle Tennessee. However, the Blue Raiders would not go down without a fight as the team battled back, creating a 5-1 run of their own. Peonia, Mason, and Huddleston each earned five kills apiece in the first set, leading the Blue Raiders offense. Despite the teams effort, it would not be enough as the Golden Eagles would take the frame over the Blue Raiders, 28-26.
Mason opened second set with a hot hand, sparking a 6-1 run for the Blue Raiders. Despite the early lead from Middle Tennessee, USM would battle back to tie the frame at seven-all. The Forsyth, Ill. product would continue her offensive flow with back-to-back aces in the set, while she rounded off the second set with seven total kills. However, Southern Miss would take a two-set advantage over Middle Tennessee, claiming the second set, 26-19.
In the third and final set, junior Dora Peonia created a late 4-1 run for the Blue Raiders, but it would not be enough to spark a comeback, as Middle Tennessee dropped the set to the Golden Eagles, 25-18.

Middle Tennessee will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 2 as the Blue Raiders travel to Nashville, Tenn. To compete against Tennessee State University.
