Raiders drop road contest at LA Tech
1/12/2019 6:32:00 PM | Men's Basketball
RUSTON, La. – Three Blue Raiders boasted double-digit points in Ruston Saturday evening as Middle Tennessee concluded its first Conference USA road trip of the season, but it wasn't enough as they dropped the contest to host LA Tech, 73-56.
Reggie Scurry finished the night with a team-high 13 points on 6 of 7 shooting to make him 10 of 13 on the weekend and added six rebounds for the Blue Raiders.
James Hawthorne added 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting and knocked in a pair of 3-pointers for the first time in his career while Antonio Green added 10 points for his 16th double-digit scoring night of the season.
"I thought we played at times really well, we just missed some shots and opportunities tonight," Head Coach Nick McDevitt said. "Our offensive execution, rhythm and the way we run things has been pretty good on this road trip."
"In pockets we are real good, we just have to find that gel that keeps us organized and efficient for 40 minutes," Hawthorne added.
Middle Tennessee got on the board first in Ruston as Donovan Sims, who poured in a career-high 28 points Thursday evening, collected his own miss and floated one in for the first basket of the night. Sims would finish the night with a career-high seven assists to just one turnover.
It wasn't long before the Blue Raiders hit a rut and gave themselves an early hole to dig out of at Thomas Assembly Center, falling behind 23-7 after a 17-0 Bulldog run over a four and a half minute stretch.
Dig they did, however, as a 16-4 run fueled by 12 points from James Hawthorne pulled MT back within four at the 6:35 mark.
After LA Tech stretched it back to 11, Middle Tennessee answered again with a basket by Karl Gamble and back-to-back triples by Junior Farquhar and Antonio Green cutting what was once a 16-point lead all the way to three.
After the Blue Raiders and Bulldogs traded baskets to bring the score to 36-33, LA Tech began to milk down the clock in the final possession and knocked in a corner three at the buzzer to send Middle Tennessee into the locker room trailing by six.
"We guarded that last possession well, but they got a bounce off the rim and kicked it out for a corner three at the buzzer," McDevitt added. "That was just kind of indicative of our night, a lot of balls didn't bounce our way in this one."
MT shot an impressive 53.8 percent from the field and hit 5 of 10 3-point attempts in the first half to make it a close contest, as LA Tech was on fire offensively at 59.3 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from beyond the arc.
The Bulldogs didn't waste any time getting going after the break as a triple from the wing and a driving layup in the lane quickly extended the lead back to double digits after just two possessions.
As Middle Tennessee struggled through another rut to open the second half, LA Tech began to pour it on as a 14-2 run had the gap at 18 points less than seven minutes into the second frame.
The Blue Raiders continued to show some fight in spurts as five consecutive points by Reggie Scurry emphasized by a dunk and one cut it back to 13.
LA Tech then opened up a 7-0 run that MT answered with a 7-1 stretch that included Scurry's second of three dunks on the evening, but the 14 point deficit on the scoreboard at the 7:50 mark and again at the 5:08 mark was as close as the Blue Raiders would get for the remainder of the evening.
The Bulldogs would put an exclamation point on the contest down the stretch with a dunk for the final two points of Anthony Duruji's game-high 19 points as his team cruised to a 73-56 win on their home floor.
Middle Tennessee is back in Murfreesboro next week as it hosts UTSA and UTEP in Murphy Center. The Blue Raiders host the Roadrunners Thursday at 6:30 and the Miners Saturday at 5:00.
