MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Two Middle Tennessee women's basketball players were honored by Conference USA after sterling performances in league play last weekend.
Senior guard A'Queen Hayes was named C-USA Player of the Week for the second time this season, and guard Taylor Sutton was named C-USA Freshman of the Week for the third time.
"Very, very deserving," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "The way we look at things is these awards are team awards because it takes a team effort, but (Hayes and Sutton) played extremely well in those two games (against Southern Miss and LA Tech)."
Hayes was outstanding defensive, offensively and on the boards in Middle Tennessee's two wins last week. She averaged 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and shot 54 percent from the field and recorded her third double-double in four C-USA games.
Hayes' greatest contribution against LA Tech came on the defensive end as she sparked the Lady Raiders' tremendous defensive effort by holding Kierra Anthony – the nation's fourth-leading scorer – to 11 points, which is 14.1 below her average. As a result, the Lady Raiders held LA Tech to 38 points – their lowest scoring output of the season.
Despite exerting great effort on the defensive end against LA Tech, Hayes still provided her third double-double in league play and fourth overall with 18 points and 13 rebounds – both game highs. Hayes' 13 rebounds were a career-high. She also was 8-of-13 from the field with two assists, one steal and one blocked shot.
That performance followed a sterling effort against Southern Miss in which Hayes netted 12 points, pulled five rebounds and had six assists.
Sutton put together another strong week in landing her third C-USA freshman honor, which leads all conference rookies. Sutton averaged 15.5 points, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steal in the two wins. Impressively, Sutton had just two turnovers in 59 minutes of action in the two games.
Sutton netted 15 points against Southern Miss, but she scored 13 of them in the second half as the Lady Raiders used a big second-half to secure the win. She scored 10 of her 13 second-half points in the decisive third quarter.
Sutton was at it against LA Tech scoring 10 of her 16 in the first half to help stake the Lady Raiders to a 33-25 halftime advantage. Sutton was 7-of-16 from the field and had just one turnover in 31 minutes in helping lead MT to victory.
Overall, these are the 67th and 68th conference player of the week winners under Insell with 30 coming in C-USA and 38 in the Sun Belt. C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World and selected by a 14-person voting panel.
