MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Taylor Sutton's emergence as a difference maker has aided Middle Tennessee's impressive run at the start of Conference USA play.
Sutton's play also has enabled her to establish herself as one of the top freshman in C-USA. Sutton, the daughter of Arthur and Melisha Sutton, was named C-USA Freshman of the Week for the fourth time Monday.
The only player in program history to accumulate more such honors is current senior Alex Johnson, who was named C-USA Freshman of the Week five times in 2015-16.
"I am just honored and surprised by all of this," Sutton said. "I am so fortunate to be surrounded by so many quality players and coaches who support me and believe in me."
Sutton, a native of Atlanta, put together a strong road trip last week as Middle Tennessee (15-4, 6-0) to help the Lady Raiders remain atop the C-USA standings. Sutton was the only Middle Tennessee player to tally double figures in both games, scoring 13 at UTSA and 10 at UTEP.
Sutton averaged 11.5 points, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals for the week. Most impressive was just two turnovers in 41 minutes of action. She has two against UTSA and followed that with five assists and no turnovers against UTEP.
"Taylor continues to work hard and improve and that is evident in her play," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "She continues to put quality games together and she has certainly impacted our team in a very positive way. It is difficult for freshmen to come in to a college program and make a strong, immediate impact. Taylor is doing that. She makes some freshman mistakes but that's going to happen and we can live with that."
Sutton's five assists against UTEP were a career high and she also added to steals. Her shooting was a strength against UTSA as she was 3-for-4 from the 3-point line.
Overall, this is the 69th player of the week winner under Insell with 31 coming in C-USA and 38 in the Sun Belt. C-USA weekly awards are presented by Top of the World and selected by a 14-person voting panel.
Middle Tennessee (15-4, 6-0) will put its six-game win streak and C-USA lead on the line when it plays host to Rice (14-3, 5-0) Thursday. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m. at Murphy Center.
