Blue Raiders Wrap Up Successful VT Invite

BLACKBURG, Va. – Middle Tennessee men's tennis finished up a successful weekend on Monday a the three day individual tournament. Max Rauch claimed No. 2 overall in singles and the Moonen/Edge doubles placed No. 2 at the Virginia Tech Invite.

Day One
DOUBLES
The Blue Raiders won their first doubles match Tom Moonen (Rotterdam, Netherlands) and partner Chris Edge (Carlisle, Great Britain) won a highly contested battle to Volk/Vasser of William & Mary, 6-4. The freshman duo Pavel Motl (Prstice, Czech Republic) and Stijn Slump (Havelte, Netherlands) fell to Bautil/Talcott, 6-0 and junior Max Rauch (Heidelberg, Germany) and freshman Francisco Rocha (Porto, Portugal) lost a close match 6-4 to Pellerito/Ruo.
SINGLES
Max Rauch defeated Oren Vasser of William & Mary in a long, three set match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and Edge got the win against Ruo Chen 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. Pavel Motl earned a dominate win over Daniel Pellerto, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Stijn Slump won his first set 6-2 before losing the last two 6-2, 6-3 to Finbar Talcott and Tom Moonen was stopped by Sebastian Quiros, 6-3 and 6-2. Luis Morillo Diaz battled closely with Jack Kelly before falling in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 3-6.
Day Two
DOUBLES
On Day 2 of the Virginia Tech Invite, Moonen/Edge took the match to the wire against No. 43 doubles Korsgaard/J. Kros of Virginia Tech, but fell 7-5 in their only loss of the weekend.
Rauch/Rocha combo were defeated by Donato/J. Kros, 6-1. Slump/Daniel Stormon won against Virginia Tech's R. Kros/Perez in dominate fashion, 6-3. The Blue Raiders evened the doubles out with Morillo/Motl win over Fragistas/Bernstine 6-4, giving MT two doubles wins on the day.
SINGLES
Slump at the battled tightly with No. 30 ranked singles Jason Kros but was defeated 6-4, 6-2. Moonen faced off against No. 118 Henrik Korsgaard in a close loss, 6-2, 7-5. Blue Raiders gained two singles wins from from Rauch, Motl and Edge in three contested matches with Motl losing the first set but taking the next two. Rocha is defeated by Brandon Perez in two sets, 6-5, 6-2. The senior Morillo took the win against Chase Bernstine to give the Blue Raiders fourth singles win, splitting Virginia Tech.
Day Three
DOUBLES
The Blue Raiders picked up three wins in doubles to start strong on the third and final day. The Edge/Moonen combo defeated Christian Lakoseljac/Christos Antonopoulos of Penn State, 6-2. Stormon/Slump topped Alp Sentay/Ben Lieb before Rocha/Rauch took down the Constant De La Bassetiere/Zach Lieb combo at the 6-3.
SINGLES
Rauch continued his hot weekend as at the by defeating Bassetiere of PSU in a tight match, 6-3, 7-5 to improve to 3-0 on the weekend. Slump and Moonen fell to opponents from Penn State
Edge notched another singles victory, defeating Ben Lieb in three sets and Morillo took home the win against Jordan Nickerson, 6-4, 6-2.
News & Notes
The Blue Raiders will travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The event is the first round of the ITA Indoor Nationals They'll be in a four team pod with (1) North Carolina, (2) Duke, and (4) Utah. The 3 seeded Blue Raiders will square off against Duke on Friday, January 25th.
