Last-second field goal sinks Blue Raiders

MT drops hard-fought battle 33-30
The Blue Raiders (2-5, 1-2) went on the road to preseason Conference USA West Division favorite North Texas (3-4, 2-1) and fell 33-30 on a last-second field goal.
After an interception on fourth down gave the Mean Green a first down and chance to ice the game with just over a minute left, a fumble granted MT a final drive down 30-23.
With backup quarterback Chase Cunningham in the game, the Raiders marched all the way for a tying score, Cunningham running it in from 4 yards out a play after converting a fourth down.
The Mean Green had 28 seconds left to get into field goal range, and it was made easier by a 50-yard kickoff return that gave them a first down at the MT 44. A few plays later, a 24-yard field goal sailed through the uprights as time expired.
The last-minute drive was the second round of late-game heroics by the Blue Raiders' second-string quarterback.
Trailing 23-16 early in the fourth quarter, Cunningham led them on a 75-yard scoring drive to even things up. Opposing QB Mason Fine wouldn't back down easily, though, engineering a 75-yard drive of his own on the ensuing possession, ending with a touchdown pass to go back up seven with eight minutes left in the contest.
It looked at the beginning of the game like an offensive battle was budding. After a Mean Green touchdown on the opening drive, MT answered with scores on its next three possessions, taking a 13-7 lead early in the second quarter.
The hot offense cooled, however.
Middle Tennessee's next seven possessions ended with six punts and a field goal, leading head coach Rick Stockstill to call on Cunningham to take over under center.
Cunningham answered the bell with two TD drives, completing 9-of-16 passes for 121 yards, one TD and an interception to go with a rushing score. Zack Dobson was his and starter Asher O'Hara's favorite target, finishing with 56 yards on six catches and 34 yards on five rushes, scoring on a reception.
While MT hit a rough patch offensively, its defense stood up to keep the game close.
The blue-clad stoppers forced three turnovers — a fumble and two interceptions — with two coming in the second half when they were most needed.
Seniors Chris Stamps and Jovante Moffatt led the way for Middle Tennessee with eight tackles and an interception apiece. DQ Thomas added seven tackles, a tackle for loss and forced fumble.
The loss drops MT to 1-2 in C-USA play. It'll look to get back into the win column on homecoming next week against FIU.
