Blue Raiders drop road contest at Charlotte
11/2/2019 5:39:00 PM | Football
After they scored on the game's opening possession to take a 7-0 lead, the Blue Raiders gave up 34 straight points, including 14 in the first quarter, and fell 34-20.
The Raiders (3-6, 2-3) went into the game 4-0 all-time against the 49ers (4-5, 2-3), but couldn't find enough offense or make key defensive plays early on to keep up with the home team, which was playing without Conference USA-leading rusher Benny LeMay. They gave up 440 total yards, including 248 on the ground, and only managed to gain 333 yards themselves, 215 rushing.
Middle Tennessee's 7-0 lead lasted only two-and-a-half minutes, as the 49ers marched 75 yards for a tying touchdown.
It looked like a barn burner was at hand, but the Blue Raider offense stalled for the rest of the first half as Charlotte kept rolling. They punted on their next four possessions after the touchdown, then fell victim to an interception with 2:47 left in the second quarter, leading to a 49ers field goal as time expired in the half.
MT found itself in a 24-7 hole as it went into the locker room, and Charlotte added its fourth TD and second field goal in the third quarter before the Blue Raiders finally got on the board again.
A 7-yard rushing touchdown from redshirt sophomore quarterback Asher O'Hara cut the lead to 34-13 with 12 seconds left in the third quarter. The drive seemed to give Middle Tennessee some offensive momentum, as it found pay dirt again on its next possession, but it was ultimately too late to mount a full-scale comeback.
O'Hara was responsible for all three Blue Raider touchdowns, two passing and one rushing. He finished 9 for 17 through the air with 118 yards and an INT and added a team-high 148 rushing yards on 15 attempts. Zack Dobson and Jimmy Marshall caught TD passes.
The Middle Tennessee defense, which was on the field for 76 plays compared to 47 for Charlotte's stoppers, was led by senior safety Jovante Moffatt, who racked up 11 tackles, including six solo. Fellow senior Khalil Brooks had seven tackles and a sack.
With three games remaining, the Blue Raiders can't afford another loss if they want to extend their school-record bowl eligibility streak to eight seasons. They'll take their second bye next week, then finish with home games against Rice and Old Dominion and a road contest at rival WKU in the regular season finale.
