MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee will look to make it six in a row in the series against UAB Saturday after taking down the Blazers in Murfreesboro on Wednesday in the front end of a rare in-week home-and-home series.
Four Blue Raiders finished in double figures in the first leg with sophomore Donovan Sims leading the way with 19 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Although Sims led the team in all three categories and made some big shots down the stretch, the 71-65 win over UAB was perhaps MT's best team performance of the season.
Junior Antonio Green had 17 points – knocking down four threes – and six rebounds with zero turnovers in 36 minutes played. Junior Reggie Scurry added 14 points and seven rebounds while freshman Jayce Johnson had 11 points and five boards.
Improved balance on offense has been important for the Blue Raiders' success in Conference USA play as Green (17.6), Sims (13.7), and Scurry (13.7) all rank in the league's Top 20 in scorers since conference play began.
The Blazers came into Wednesday night with the league's top shooting percentage (46%), but were stifled by poor shooting in the loss at Murphy Center as they converted just 33% from the field in the second half and 21% from three over the full 40 minutes.
The Blazers were atop the conference with a 6-2 league record, but now sit in a four-way tie for second place after the Blue Raiders picked up their second win over a top-ranked team in league play.
UAB remains two games up on Middle Tennessee in the all-time series at 10-8, but the Blue Raiders have won each of the last two games at Bartow Arena in their current five-game streak in the series.
Saturday's tilt in Birmingham will tip off at 7:00 p.m. tip-off and can be watched live on ESPN+.
