MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Bonus Play is officially here as the first edition of Conference USA's new end-of-season scheduling format kicks off Saturday when the Blue Raiders host the Charlotte 49ers inside Murphy Center.
The two teams are meeting for the second time this season as the Blue Raiders controlled the first meeting much of the evening en route to a 71-53 win. The 18-point defeat was the second worst in league action for the 49ers and was MT's largest margin of victory over a Division I opponent this season.
The Blue Raiders are riding the hot-shooting Antonio Green on the perimeter and work horse Reggie Scurry in the paint as of late as the pair combined for 55 points last Saturday at Marshall, each collecting career highs with 31 and 24 points, respectively.
Green made 11 3-pointers on the week at WKU and Marshall on his way to surpassing Giddy Potts' mark of 85 3-pointers made last season and now stands as the single season record holder at Middle Tennessee with 92 and counting to his name.
Scurry has been a beast on the glass for the Blue Raiders, boasting 6.8 boards per game in league play with a league-leading 3.9 of those coming on the offensive glass. His second chance opportunities have not only helped MT become more competitive in league play but have also upped his field goal percentage to 61.6 percent in C-USA games, the third best mark in the league.
The young 49ers are led by Conference USA Player of the Year candidate and lone senior Jon Davis, whose 22.3 points per game league action are third most in the conference behind only UTSA' high-scoring duo of Jhivvan Jackson and Keaton Wallace.
Davis also serves as Charlotte's second-leading rebounder (4.4) and is closing in on his fourth consecutive 100-assist season with 91 on the year.
The Blue Raiders lead the all-time series 8-1 and have never lost to the 49ers as Conference USA foes. Saturday's tip is set for 5:00 p.m. and the contest can be streamed live on C-USA TV.
