MTSU splits doubleheader for the second weekend in a row
2/24/2019 7:04:00 PM | Baseball
Middle Tennessee continued to ride its' hot starting pitching on Sunday, splitting a doubleheader with the Bradley Braves. Peyton Wigginton had a career-best outing in game one, leading to a Blue Raider win. In the second game, an extra-base hit in the tenth inning resulted in a one-run loss for MTSU.
Game one
Peyton Wigginton grabbed the brim of his hat, wiped his brow and stepped onto the rubber. He stared down at Aaron Antonini for the sign, nodded and came set. The next pitch he was going to throw could accomplish something that Middle Tennessee hadn't done since 2016. He kicked his right leg toward the sky and delivered. The pitch was a sweeping, low-70's curveball that broke across the outside corner of the plate. Bradley's Eli Rawlinson waved at it and missed for the game's final out.
Wigginton looked toward the sky, yelled and pumped his fist. For the first time since Jake Wyrick did it on that April day in 2016, Wigginton's complete-game shutout gave the Blue Raiders a 1-0 win.
"That's what we're expecting out of (Wigginton)," said Head Coach Jim Toman. "He's capable of doing that every time. You see a complete game very rarely in college baseball, and he did it in under 100 pitches with one walk and 12 K's, it was awesome."
The sophomore's dazzling performance came at a time when his team needed it most. With his team nursing a narrow 1-0 lead for most of the game, Wigginton was able to dance out of danger twice in the later innings. After allowing a one-out single in the sixth, the southpaw induced a ground ball that turned into a 4-6-3 double play to end the Braves threat. Just two innings later, Bradley was able to get two men into scoring position with two outs. The Franklin, Tennessee, native hurled another one of his signature breaking pitches to freeze Bradley's Luke Shadid and strand both the tying and go-ahead runs on base to end the inning.
In what was a career-day for Wigginton, he struck out a career-high 12 hitters, an MTSU feat that hadn't been accomplished since fellow left-hander Cody Puckett did it in 2017 when he punched-out 10 Southern Miss hitters in a game.
The game's lone run came in the fifth frame via a Drew Huff sacrifice fly that brought in Darrell Freeman Jr. It proved to be the only offense that was needed to snatch the win in the pitching duel.
Game two
After being deadlocked at one from the third inning on into extras, an RBI triple by Bradley's Andy Shadid was enough to bury the Blue Raiders 2-1 in ten innings.
Carson Lester got the ball to start the second game for MT, and the senior answered the call by going six innings and allowing just one run on four strikeouts.
After seeing MTSU starters throw the first 15 innings in the doubleheader, Drew Huff and Tyler Holcombe combined to throw the final four innings. The seniors struck out three and allowed just one run out of the bullpen.
Offensively, the Blue Raiders were led by second baseman Nick Carnevale. The sophomore reached base three times, collecting a pair of hits and scoring a run in the final game of the annual Mule Mix Classic.
"We've gotta get better, but I'm proud of the guys and the way they competed today," Toman said.
