Blue Raiders rally late, but fall in home opener

Austin Peay (9-6) jumped out to a four-run lead over Middle Tennessee (7-9) after three innings, via a trio of home runs.
The comeback attempt started for the Blue Raiders in the fourth inning with a two-run homer by Lexi Cushing, who tied the school record for career home runs with 23. MT added a third run in the fifth inning as Jocelynn De La Cruz doubled down the left field line to bring home Summer Burgess.
After both teams were held scoreless in the sixth, Austin Peay's bats came back to life, scoring six runs in the top half of the seventh. The Blue Raiders added three runs in the final frame as Burgess scored on a wild pitch, Cushing brought home Lani Rodriguez and Ryan King singled home Samantha Valentine, however, the Govs held on to claim victory.

Middle Tennessee will hit the road back to Florida for the second consecutive weekend to play six games in three days in the USF-Clearwater Parks & Recreation Invitational. Play begins on Friday against Penn at 9:00 a.m. and Bethune-Cookman at 2:00 p.m.
