MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee put forth a tremendous effort against visiting Vanderbilt, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Raiders dropped a hard-fought 5-2 decision to Vanderbilt.
The Blue Raiders gave the packed house at the Adams Tennis Complex plenty to cheer about early as they took the early lead by earning the doubles point.
Francisco Rocha and Max Rauch earned their sixth-straight duals match by a score of 6-3. Pavel Motl and Gonzola Morrell Raschitore clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win on court 3.
Unfortunately, for the Blue Raiders, they were only able to capture one singles win despite pushing Vanderbilt to the limit in several sets.
Motl earned his third straight win to provide Middle Tennessee with its only win in singles competition. Rauch continued to put forth strong efforts but dropped a pair of heartbreaking sets in tiebreakers, 7-5, 7-5.
MT will now turn its attention to Conference USA opener on Friday against Rice.
The Owls had a record of 9-12 last season, including two losses to the Blue Raiders, with MT knocking the Owls out of the C-USA tourney in the opener.
Along with a match against Rice, MT will face South Alabama on Sunday for the 32nd meeting in series history. The Jaguars lead the series 21-10, but Blue Raiders have won six of the last eight matchups. The last time the programs met up was March 24, 2018 where MT won 4-1.
Play gets underway at 5 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. on Sunday at the Adams Tennis Complex.
