Women's Tennis Sweeps the Lions

MURFREESBORO, TENN. - Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team found redemption Saturday afternoon after coming off a loss from Furman last week. The Blue Raiders not only found that redemption, but they did so in dominating fashion by sweeping the North Alabama Lions 7-0.

The Blue Raiders started the afternoon in the right way with Marta Peris Herrero and Lidia Burrows easily taking the first doubles match, 6-2. Both the second and third courts were throwing blows back and forth each knotted at 3-3. The Lions took the lead on court one 4-3 but Costanza Magazzini and Luisa Zirilli broke twice to earn MT the doubles point.

MT kept things rolling right on into singles play. Junior Marta Peris Herrero put together a commanding performance not surrendering a single game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Lion's Elise Sickle. It was the third singles win of the year for Peris and the 38^th singles win of her Middle Tennessee career.

Simultaneously, Zirilli and Magazzini each claimed a victory, putting the Blue Raiders up 4-0 and giving them the guaranteed win. Zirilli improved to 6-2 on the season while Magazzini got herself to four wins on the season.

Lee Barnard won 7-5, 6-1 to pick up her fourth singles win this spring. The sophomore now sits at 20-15 in her career in singles play.

Burrows finished out her match 6-3, 6-4 to secure the sixth point for the Blue Raiders. Last on the court, Kermet had to fight back to win 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) after finding herself down 5-2 in the second set but she endured and helped her team complete the sweep.

Up next
The Blue Raiders now go on the road four straight matches starting with a trip to the west coast to take on San Diego (March 6) and San Diego State (March 8) before flying east to West Virginia to play against Marshall (March 15). Finally south to challenge Tulane in New Orleans.
