HOUSTON – Middle Tennessee (15-25, 9-9) gained an early lead but couldn't hold on as the Rice Owls (18-23, 9-9) took game three of the series, 7-5.
Middle Tennessee grabbed two runs in the second inning to grab their first lead of the series, when Tanner Parker and Darien Prewett each grabbed an RBI single. The Blue Raiders would score two more times in the following inning when Benefield and Christian both scored on an error. But the Owls would storm back.
Rice scored twice in the third inning on two RBI hits. They would take the lead in the seventh inning on an RBI single before doubling their lead in the eighth with a solo home run. The Blue Raiders loaded the bases in the top of the ninth but the Owls were able to thwart the scoring threat with a double play.
Darien Prewett once again had the hot bat for MT. He finished with two hits and a key RBI. Tanner Parker also had a good day at the plate, picking up two hits, scoring twice and driving in a run.
Zach Keenan got the start for MT but had an early exit in the fourth inning. The sophomore went 3.2 innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out six batters.
