Virginia transfer has one year remaining
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Virginia graduate transfer Shakyna Payne has signed a National Letter of Intent with Middle Tennessee and will have one year of eligibility remaining, Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell has announced.
Payne, a 6-foot-3 forward, appeared in 42 career games at Virginia and her best season was in 2018-19 when she scored 89 percent of her career points and pulled 86 percent of her career rebounds. She will be eligible for the 2019-20 campaign.
"Shakyna is very athletic and a great rebounder," Insell said. "She has a tremendous basketball IQ, and we are excited to have her at Middle Tennessee. She was more or less a role player during her time at Virginia. Shakyna is coming off of her most productive season and we look to build upon that in her remaining season of college basketball."
Payne will become the second graduate transfer for Middle Tennessee in as many years. She follows A'Queen Hayes who become the program's first graduate transfer when she transferred from EKU for the 2018-19 campaign. Payne hails from Acworth, Ga., and played three years of varsity basketball at Etowah before finishing her senior year at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy.
Payne is the eighth player in the 2019 signing class. She joins prep standouts Aislynn Hayes, Taylor Lewis, Kiya Turner and Courtney Whitson, as well as transfers Rellah Boothe, Anastasia Hayes and Eternati Willock. Newcomer Ra'Shika White also becomes eligible for the 2019-20 season.
