MURFERESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee placed two Blue Raiders on the postseason baseball all-conference teams, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the Conference USA office.
Peyton Wigginton was named second team all-conference as a utility player, while Josh Young was one of 12 to make the all-freshman team.
Coming into the season, Wigginton had no clue he would have as much of an impact with his bat as he did on the mound.
"It was a really fun year," the Franklin, Tennessee native said. "I always wanted to hit, and it was a really great opportunity to be able to do both."
The sophomore finished third on the team in batting average, hitting .289 in 83 at-bats.
"Peyton really improved on the mound from his freshman year, and he was a nice addition in the lineup with a bat in his hands," head coach Jim Toman said.
The highlight of the season came in the bottom of the 13th against Murray State. Wigginton delivered a three-run walk-off home run that gave the Blue Raiders an 8-5 victory.
Young became one of the most relied on options out of the bullpen for the Blue Raiders.
"I couldn't be in this position without Coach Toman and Coach Bunn believing in me," the Knoxville, Tennessee native said.
The freshman held the lowest ERA on the team at 3.10. In his 18 appearances, Young picked up 35 strikeouts, allowing just 12 walks. He also allowed just one home run in 40.2 innings.
"I had a great group of guys backing me up and making plays behind me when I needed it most," he said.
In five starts, Young allowed just five earned runs.
"Young came in and did a really nice job as both a reliever and a starter when we needed him to," Toman said.
