Round 1 Results
AUBURN, Ala. – Day one of the NCAA Auburn Regional saw its fair share of high scores, but Blue Raider senior Hanley Long battled her way through Saugahatchee Country Club to a solid 2-over par 74 to sit in the Top 20 through 18 holes.
"Her ball striking was really good today, and minus a few tough putts we hoped would fall she had a great day," Adams added. "She has left herself in position to have a great shot at moving up with some more good numbers the next two days."
After getting through some nerves early in the day with a lingering back injury coming in, Long went 1-under par through her final 14 holes to shoot up a leaderboard that includes some of the nation's best college golfers.
"I feel like I've put myself in good position for the rest of the week," Long said. "I was slightly concerned about how my back would hold up, but it felt fine today. I think I hit the ball pretty well, all I need is a few more putts to fall to keep moving up the leaderboard."
Just as she has been all year, Long was her best on the Par 3 holes with a 2-under par mark on the day. The senior entered regional play fourth nationally in Par 3 scoring (2.95).
Of the 96 golfers in the field, 28 entered the week ranked in the Top 100 nationally while Long sits just outside that mark at No. 118 nationally. Through 18 holes, only 11 of the 28 boast a mark better than Long's 2-over par 74.
"The rankings are just a number," Long stated. "We knew everyone here this week was going to be talented, but we're all playing the same course. It feels good to be pretty high up the leaderboard, though, and to have some momentum going into the next two days."
Long will tee off on the first hole Tuesday morning at 8:50 a.m. alongside Texas State's Anne-Charlotte Mora (E) and Fresno State's Brigitte Thibault (+2).
