Chemadi Named C-USA Male Athlete of the Year

IRVING, Texas – After a stellar performance during his junior campaign, Kigen Chemadi has been named the 2019 Conference USA Male Track Athlete of the Year, the league announced Friday afternoon.
Chemadi rounded off his junior slate at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Ainbkoi, Kenya native qualified for two events, the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter. He finished third overall in the steeplechase, finishing with a time of 8:40.22, earning first-team All-American honors. Meanwhile, in the 5,000-meter, the junior claimed a 16th-place finish (14:22.92), receiving second-team All-American.
Through his outdoor season, Chemadi claimed six first-place finishes, including titles at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 1,500 meter, 5,000 and the 3,000 steeplechase. With the three titles, Chemadi was named the Male High Point Scorer of the Meet and Male Performer of the Meet. He also posted three new personal best times during his outdoor season.
Earlier in the indoor season, Chemadi notched three first-place finishes. The junior claimed a title at the C-USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 5,000 and qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship in the 3,000 meter (13th, 8:12.40), earning second-team All-American.
Throughout the 2018-2019 season, Chemadi claimed nine gold medals and placed among the top 10 31 times.
