MT to face Villanova in tournament opener
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee Men's Basketball will once again compete in one of the nation's premier in-season tournaments in 2019, as the Blue Raiders are set to play in the Myrtle Beach Invitational this November alongside Villanova, Mississippi State, Baylor, Utah, Tulane, Ohio and Coastal Carolina.
MT will take on Villanova in the opening game of the tournament on Nov. 21 at 10:30 a.m. CT. The Wildcats fell to Purdue in the Round of 32 in last year's NCAA Tournament after winning the Big East Tournament a week earlier. Head Coach Jay Wright's team, who won the 2016 and 2018 National Championship, was slotted at No. 23 in the final AP Top 25 poll.
"We're looking forward to being a part of this year's Myrtle Beach Invitational," Head Coach Nick McDevitt said. "Our opening round game against Villanova presents a tough challenge, but we're excited about the opportunity it presents our program. Coach (Jay) Wright has built them into one of the nation's premier programs and has backed it up with a pair of national titles in the last four years."
Villanova hosted the Blue Raiders in Philadelphia back in 2004 and downed MT by a score of 81-62 in the only previous meeting between the two programs.
On Nov. 22, MT will take on either Mississippi State or Tulane. On the other side of the bracket are Ohio and Utah along with 2019 postseason participant Baylor and host team Coastal Carolina. The Blue Raiders will wrap up the tournament against a team from the opposite side of the bracket on Nov. 24.
In last year's Thanksgiving tournament, MT competed against Stanford, Butler and eventual NCAA Champion Virginia in the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis.
As the tournament is owned and operated by ESPN, all 12 games of the 2019 Myrtle Beach Invitational will be televised on ESPN2, ESPNU or ESPNEWS.
"The chance to play in a high-level event in front of a national television audience gives us the opportunity to showcase our program and our great university," McDevitt added.
