Team honored for second consecutive year
MURFREESBORO, Tenn.— Academic excellence has proven to be a cornerstone of the Middle Tennessee volleyball team, as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) selected MT as Team Academic Award recipients on Monday.
This award comes on the heels of four Blue Raiders earning a GPA of 4.0 in the spring semester. Four other members of the team completed the spring with a 3.5-3.9 GPA, leading MT volleyball to a 3.76 team GPA in spring 2019.
The program now has two AVCA Team Academic Awards after Head Coach Chuck Crawford's team earned the program's first such honor in 2018 with a team GPA of 3.55.
"When we arrived on campus, we set several cultural goals: We want to be servant leaders in the community, amazing students in the classroom and compete for championships on the court," Crawford said. "We've accomplished the first two, and with the latest recruiting class we are steps closer to the third goal."
It was a rewarding 2018-19 school year for several individuals on the MT volleyball team as well. After earning a spot on the 2018 C-USA All-Academic Team, rising senior Brienna Tankesley joined fellow returners Dora Peonia and Taylor Hammill in the Chi Alpha Sigma National Student Athlete Honor Society.
"Considering the challenging majors our student athletes pursue, this is an incredible accomplishment," Crawford added. "We've structured our program so that our student athletes regularly attend study groups and make up any missed practice reps at other times of the day."
Crawford's Blue Raiders were one of 189 NCAA Division I women's volleyball teams to earn AVCA Team Academic Award honors.
The start of the 2019 season is quickly approaching, with MT opening the season in St. Louis, Missouri, on Aug. 30 and 31. The first match at Alumni Memorial Gym is slated for Sept. 22 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
