MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Men's Golf duo James Beckner and Tanner Owens have added another line to their resumes this week, as the pair have been named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for the 2018-19 season.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. In addition, they must participate in 50 percent of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0, and must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their college or university.
Beckner graduated in May with a perfect 4.0 GPA in Biology and will begin dental school at the University of Tennessee in the fall of 2019.
The Kingsport, Tenn., native notched a 75.0 stroke average in his final collegiate campaign and earned a Top 10 finish at the East Bay Deli Classic to end the fall semester.
Owens holds a 3.9 GPA in Middle Tennessee's recently added Healthcare Administration program and stands as the only current student-athlete at MT enrolled in the program.
The Milton, Tenn., native held Middle Tennessee's third best scoring average on the season at 72.4 strokes per round and posted two Top 5 finishes and six Top 16 finishes on the season thanks in part to a team-leading 14 rounds of par or better.
"Congratulations to both James and Tanner on being named All American Scholars," Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "James Beckner was the ultimate student-athlete. He was a leader on the course and in the classroom and I can only dream that my children will grow up to be like James. We wish him the best in dental school and know that he will always be True Blue!
"Tanner Owens had his best college year last year both on the course and in the classroom. I am proud of the strides he made and look for him to continue that in his senior year!"
Of the 279 Division I honorees announced, Beckner and Owens are two of 15 that competed in Conference USA. Beckner is a repeat selection after being named to the list in 2018 while the Blue Raiders now boast a total of 13 GCAA All-American Scholars since 2002.
